The European Handball Players Union (EHPU)

The European Handball Players Union (EHPU) is the institute body representing the professional handball players in Europe. EHPU was founded in 2008 during the European Championship in Norway. Today, it represents more than 2500 male and female professional handball players from different continents. EHPU is composed of the 7 national unions of Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Spain and Greece.

EHPU is perceived by EHF as the representative body of the professional players in Europe. The purposes of EHPU are to get the players voice being heard in the institutional handball world, we want to bring information from the pitch to the governance body and from the governance body to the locker room.

EHPU is also trying to help the development of new national unions, in order to represent all professional handball players.

Definition of “professional handball player”:

The International Handball Federation (IHF) defines a professional handball player as someone with a written employment contract with a club who is paid more for handball activities than the actual related expenses.

The IHF's "Player Eligibility Code" specifies these criteria:

  • Written contract: A written contract between the club and the player is mandatory. Verbal agreements do not comply with IHF regulations.

  • Financial compensation: The player receives payment that exceeds the actual costs of playing handball (e.g., travel expenses, sports equipment, insurance, etc.).

  • Semi-professionals: Players with other regular work or employment in addition to their paid handball activities (semi-professionals) are also considered professionals if they meet the above criteria.
